I grew up with Serg’s. Back when I was in grade school in the 1980s, I always made sure to buy one or two bars of the yellow variant every time we went to the grocery store. I remember one time, I asked if I could get a whole box, and I was overjoyed when my aunt agreed! In high school, whenever I brought Serg’s to class, my friends would always ask me for a piece.
When I was in college in the early 1990s, Serg’s became my favorite “currency.” Whenever my classmates or friends needed a favor, I’d ask them to pay me with Serg’s chocolates instead! I gave in to the request of a guy friend to introduce him to a friend of mine, but only if he bought me a whole box of Serg’s. Yes, I happily accepted Serg’s chocolates as bribes back then!
In the early or mid 2000s, I spotted a café with the Serg’s sign at Shangri-La EDSA. I went inside, treated myself to a cup of their chocolate drink, and saw their chocolate bars on display. I asked if it was owned by the brand, and I wanted to buy some so badly, but I didn’t have enough money with me at the time. I told myself I’d come back and buy plenty next time. Since I lived in Marikina then, I rarely went to that area. When I finally got the chance to return, the café was already gone. I truly felt bad and regretted missing the chance to enjoy my favorite chocolate again.
Years later, when I saw a post saying Serg’s would be making a comeback, I was so excited! But then the pandemic happened, and everything was put on hold. Now that things seem to be going in favor of Serg’s, I am sincerely praying that it returns with its original recipe. That way, not only can I relive all those sweet memories, but the new generations will also get to taste and fall in love with the goodness of Serg’s, just like I did. It’s more than just chocolate to me; it’s a sweet, cherished part of my growing up years.❤️
